MISSION & PURPOSE

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization. Its mission is to encourage the informed and active participation of citizens in government and to influence public policy through education and advocacy.

The League is probably best known for its varied services to voters: encouraging citizens to register and to vote and to take part in government and politics. Voters Service activities include sponsoring candidates meetings, debates, or interviews; distributing Voter Information Guides; conducting voter registration drives; providing information about voting; and getting out the vote on election day.

After studying an issue, if the League reaches consensus, or member agreement, League can formulate positions for action. The League of Women Voters is truly a grassroots organization, as direction for action comes From The Members. That action might be lobbying legislators, writing letters, or giving testimony before legislative committees.

Even if the League has a position on an issue, LWV will always provide nonpartisan information on candidates and ballot issues, such as when the League provides explanations of, and arguments for both sides of a constitutional amendment.

Financial support for the League of Women Voters comes from member dues and the contributions of citizens who want to promote good government.
