What you can do to protect the earth from global warming
by Doreen Robinson (Morocco, 92-94)
1. Use energy efficient fluorescent bulbs. A 23-watt fluorescent bulb produces about the same amount of light as a 100-watt incandescent bulb. A 23-watt fluorescent bulb will last approximately 10,000 hours while a regular bulb will only last 750 hours. 2. Only buy cars that get at least 30 miles per gallon. 3. Look for the Energy Star label when buying home and office products. 4. Find and plug leaks in your doors and windows. Fill in moving parts with weatherstripping and non-moving parts with caulking. 5. Install storm windows or double-paned windows. If you have windows you can't replace, consider plastic film kits or other temporary fixes. To learn more go visit www.efficientwindows.org 6.Clean or replace furnace and air conditioner filters once a month during heating/cooling seasons. 7. Use a microwave or toaster oven to cook small portions and a conventional oven or stove-top for larger portions. 8. Buy a refrigerator that is the right size for your needs to avoid wasting energy to cool empty space. 9. Whenever possible, walk, carpool or bike to work. Don't forget to use mass transit! 10. Turn off your computer when not in use for long periods of time.
