Webelos I

Saturday April 22, 2000 The Webelos I den visited Dr. Biersdorfer of Youngstown State University's Geology department. The purpose of the visit along with about 25 cubs from other packs was to earn their Geologist pins. All of the requirements for the pin were fulfilled. Some of the geology facts they needed to learn were the cycle of rock formation, identification of minerals in every day life, identifying rocks in the environment, and drawing pictures of the rock changes (volcanoes, earth quakes, etc.) The boys finished the morning with pizza and pop at their assistant den leaders home. This was an excellent opportunity for the boys to earn their geology pins and explore the wonders of geology. Many thanks top Dr. Biersdorfer and Sassy Pickard for their efforts in making this event a reality and a success. Check out the photos below and some pretty interesting links.

Slides and exhibits helped the learning process.

Scouts keep their own logs on the activities they learn.

Everyone learns about the MOH's Hardness Scale

Comparing notes and sharing information is encouraged.

Dr. Biersdorfer explains the hardness scale while webelos try it for themselves.
